Knowledge and Skills for practice
Developing core skills
A key objective of vocational education and training
Firstly: Caring System One: In this scenario the Care Assistant under the supervision of the registered nurse takes on responsibility for carrying out those activities, which will meet self-care needs. For example, residents confined to bed will be unable to do many of the things they used to do for themselves. The Care Assistant will be trained to assist in these needs. For example change an incontinence pad. The checklist is contained in the first part of this course and is the Activities of Living workshop. The workshop, which is a ‘framework for care’ or an overview of the ‘needs’ of the resident or patient.
Secondly: Caring System Two: In this scenario the Care Assistant is needed to carry out some activities, which contribute to the meeting of self-care needs. However the patient is able to meet some of the needs. An example would be where the patient needs to be transported to the toilet by wheelchair but on arrival can undress to use the toilet.
Thirdly: Caring System Three: In this scenario residents are potentially capable of meeting self-care needs and the Care Assistant’s activity relates to teaching and supporting them so that they will eventually be able to meet the self-care need. An example would be to instruct the resident or patient to take bran and cereals for breakfast and to drink lots of water or other fluids to prevent constipation.
